Sankore University is the oldest continuously operating institution of higher education in Sub-Saharan Africa. The University of Sankoré has its roots in the Sankoré Mosque, which was built in 988 AD with the financial backing of a Malinke woman. The city of Timbuktu itself was founded in 1100 AD in Mali by the Tuareg people. The ruler of the Mali Empire, Mansa Musa later took control over the city. The university boasted approximately 25,000 students out of a total of 100,000 of the city's population. Subjects studied in the university included geography, astronomy, medicine, and even history.
